Selected Poems of JÜRI TALVET (Set Eight)

The Language of Autumn
Do the golden birches
and crimson maples
in the Latvian village named Bāle
speak Latvian or the language
of autumn?
Do they really have
the initial B (breasts,
a double well – depth spread
across depth)?
At the vast frontier
of non-semiotized space
I shout against nothingness.
Words
shatter in the air.
MIRACLE OF THE VIRGIN
A singer – a gorgeous Italian woman from
other times – suddenly came to life in
the radio’s metallic dusk: a song of
other times, of other beauty! Even
the paralyzed grandfather perked up, sprang
from bed like a schoolboy on the first day
of his summer holidays: “Turn it up,
turn it up, don’t let her get away –
I must listen to her always, even
in my coffin, under the earth!”

AN OLD STORY
Despairing Hamlet composes poems against the war
waged by his fatherland. The prime minister is aging
Claudius who drones on about the fatherland’s honor,
but whose thoughts obsess over the burning bush
in Gertrude’s garden. Gertrude is an ex-foreign minister,
a young woman with long legs, a former spy
who spun the heads of seven James Bonds
and now with a sly smile explains to journalists
in scientific language that the goal of the fatherland
is to annihilate the enemy’s infrastructure
and that the fatherland’s best and brightest have invented
a missile that at night, when the enemy is in bed asleep,
turns that infrastructure into a black hole –
without ever disturbing the infrastructure’s
wife and little daughter. Hamlet commits suicide.
Claudius fornicates with Gertrude, and outside
the people chant: fatherland! fatherland!
WHOSE BONEPRINTS IT DOESN’T QUESTION
The immigration office secures
a thumbprint for the passport.
Sand street. A proper citizen
for five more years. Poplar
pulp. 50 meters farther –
the graveyard gate, and beyond it
world citizens, those whose
bodies the state doesn’t solicit,
whose bone-prints it doesn’t question.
